PMEA Music Performance Assessments
The Music Performance Assessment program provides opportunities for students, ensembles, and directors to benefit from the performance assessment experience through our professional association, PMEA. While most participating ensembles are from the high school level, many middle school ensembles do participate along with some from grades 5 & 6!
Music Performance Assessments (MPA's) are most commonly offered throughout PA for the following performance contexts: Band/Orchestra and Chorus. Additional hosts are always welcome!
Interested directors may also host an MPA for Jazz Ensemble or Percussion Ensemble, as the existing structure can be quickly updated and reinstated. The Solo/Small Ensemble MPA context is being updated for 2023 for committed hosts elsewhere in PA and will also be available for interested hosts in D1.
District 1 has been a leader since ‘PMEA Adjudication’ was launched in 1986 in offering events throughout an MPA 'season' scheduled from mid-March to mid-May. MPA's are also offered in District 5, just a short drive away for many D1 ensembles.
The current MPA Calendar as well as all guides, forms and resources supporting Music Performance Assessments may be easily accessed within the MPA area of the PMEA website at http://www.pmea.net/adjudication/
Tom Snyder, retired instrumental music teacher and Arts Coordinator at West Allegheny SD here in D1, has been the State MPA Coordinator since 2004. Contact Tom with any questions about participating in or hosting an MPA at tsnyder@westasd.org or (724) 816-0420. (Tom’s school email remains active as he continues to assist with WA’s musical theatre productions.)
